The future of Mammography Screening

Centralized reporting and AI: how ZEEROmed and Lunit supported Treviso

ZEEROmed MIS, a software developed for mammography screening, and Lunit INSIGHT MMG, an artificial intelligence algorithm, have speeded up the reporting times and improved the workflow of the screening program of ULSS2 Marca Trevigiana.
Dr. Morana and Dr. Weiss talk about their experience.

Scenario

In 2019 the mammography screening system of Treviso province was unified thanks to ZEEROmed technology on Cloud.

ZEEROmed Screening allowed to centralize the reporting at Treviso’s Senology Radiology.

Mammograms are now performed in six sites in the province – each with its own RIS PACS systems – and read at Treviso Hospital.

ZEEROmed Screening benefits

We noticed how important it is to have an application that has been developed based on the input and suggestions of our breast radiologists, and that meets our specific requirements.

This is how Dr. Weiss, Head of the Diagnostic Area of the Breas Center, begins to describe her experience with ZEEROmed Screening.

Dr. Claudia Weiss

The Mammography Information System (MIS) is entirely dedicated to mammographic screening activities and has specific configurations that “allow to manage a relevant workflow”.

Dr. Weiss tells us about how, also thanks to ZEEROmed, she and her team have managed to double the important number of exams to read.

Senologists have to yearly report 50,000 mammograms, that is 100,000 readings since the screening program includes double reading.

Second-level management, dedicated anamnesis, comparison with previous exams, and statistics visualization, are just some of the features that optimize the management and the reporting of screening programs.

Dr. Weiss concludes by highlighting the importance of tools that allow to share and to remotely manage the exams, especially in a future where there will be few radiologists. Mutual assistance between different facilities will be therefore necessary.

The integration with Artificial Intelligence

The integration with the AI algorithm of our partner Lunit further optimized the workflow.
After the halt in screening caused by Covid, it was essential to recover a large amount of work backlog.
It was crucial to find a solution that would support radiologists and that would integrate with the MIS: Lunit has been the ideal solution.
The integration between ZEEROmed MIS and Lunit INSIGHT MMG allows to see the area marked by the algorithm with a simple click.
The presence of an Abnormality Score enables reading prioritization.
Therefore, patients are called for second levels depending on the day of the exam execution and on the risk reported by the application.

We have improved our screening quality”, says Dr. Weiss, “I think it would be difficult, if not impossible, to go back to the way things were before.

The future of mammography screening and radiology

These applications will have a key role to reduce the significant workload. According to Dr. Weiss, “we will move towards a single reading supported by AI applications as if it were a colleague”.
Thanks to other analyses than morphological ones, applications will be helpful in the future, allowing custom screening.

This opinion corresponds with that of Dr. Morana, Head ofULSS2 Diagnostic Radiology.

Dr. Morana says that these applications

will be able to analyze the structure of lesions and use that information to provide indications of prognosis and responsiveness to specific therapies. We are entering the realm of personalized medicine.
